N.sp Vikingの栽培 (ys-exotics.com)

N.sp Vikingの栽培 (ys-exotics.com)

I bought a Nepenthes Viking, recommended by an aqua shop staff member. I loved its striking red color against the dark green of my aquarium, but the leaves withered after about two weeks due to the significant difference in the original environment. Interestingly, the roots are still alive.

The original environment was a sealed paludarium tank with temperature control. The plant was not only for sale, but it was also used in the layout, and the roots were growing so much that they were attaching to the walls. In my house, there is no greenhouse and the air conditioning is not always on. I only place it near the aquarium, which is heated to around 26 degrees Celsius. A website I referred to said that providing a saucer of water under the pot, called "koshimizu" in Japanese, is good for the plant, but in my case, I have the plant sitting on top of hygrolon that draws water from the aquarium tank.

The roots had grown very long, so I tried placing them in both unheated and heated tanks, and they have remained without withering or rotting for over a month in both.

Now, the Nepenthes has awakened and started moving with the warmth of spring. I have bought several deep slotted pots (Prestera and similar products), so I plan to transplant them into nice sphagnum moss during the Golden Week holiday.

After adding mist to the paludarium, an unknown fern appeared naturally. It is the one with a light white color in the front.

I've only added a wall (epiweb-hygrolon) and driftwood, and haven't done much else in the past year. Among the two ferns in the back, the one with branching leaves is Microsorum trident (Tropica), which I bought at a shop. The other one with a darker color appeared naturally, even though I don't remember buying it. This fern started to grow after I raised the water level to that of a normal aquarium for about a week. I wanted ferns with this color and the right size, so I'm leaving them as they are.

It's interesting how plants wait for their preferred environment and grow when the time comes. I wonder how spores and seeds judge the environment. I feel a sense of mystery in the unexpected encounter born from adding mist.
